Cannibal Corpse: The Wretched Spawn

My favorite Cannibal Corpse album to date, "The Wretched Spawn" shows a lot of Cannibal Corpse's ability to be more than just "that band with all the blood and guts". Corpsegrinder's vocals are a strong as ever. His growls and guttural tone is executed very well, while is high pitched screams are agonizingly pleasant to hear. The guitar work here is what I enjoyed most. The riffs hammer away from the moment the first track begins, but it's the complexity of those riffs I enjoyed most. They are not just classic chug, chug, chug riffs death metal gets associated with, but there is some real technical work to be heard here as well as some killer solos. On that note, I will say that although the drums are present and add a layer of depth to the overall sound, they take a backseat to the guitars and vocals. Songs like "Festering in the Crypt" show the ability to slow things down and play with more groove, while "Nothing Left to Mutilate" shows of their more technical side (it's not technical death metal in that sense). Cannibal Corpse has always been viewed as a gimmick, but this album to me, showed that they were just more than brutal death metal with absurd lyrics and gruesome cover artwork. Okay the last two still apply, but I still think this album musically, is there best.

Highlights: "Psychotic Precision" "They Deserve to Die" "Festering in the Crypt" "Nothing Left to Mutilate"
